Bridget Rowe participates in summer cross-cultural experience

2014 May 20

Bridget Rowe of Renton, Washington, is one of 33 Dordt College students embarking on a two-to three-week adventure, most of which will be in a foreign country. Rowe is a senior majoring in fine arts studio and social work. She also has minors in sociology and the Kuyper Scholars Program.

Students have chosen one of six summer international programs into Korea, the Netherlands, United Kingdom (Oxford University), Puerto Rico, Spain, and Zambia. Others are studying at Au Sable Institute in both the Great Lakes region and the Pacific Rim.

Students immerse themselves in the culture, learning about the country's history and culture, discovering the beauty and diversity of God's world, and exploring the region.

"Studying abroad truly changes the lives and shapes the minds of our students," says Linda Schroedermeier, Dordt College coordinator of international students and off-campus programs. "Dordt's summer cross-cultural courses are a wonderful opportunity for our students for whom a semester-long experience might not be possible."

Three of the programs are led by Dordt College faculty. "Many of the faculty meet with their students a number of times before the course begins so that students can start learning about the history and context of the location they're visiting," said Schroedermeier. "This allows students to really engage in the place from the get-go."
