Heather Kaemingk spent spring break on service trip

2017 May 25

Heather Kaemingk of Sioux Center, Iowa, joined 120 Dordt College students, who spent their spring break doing service projects throughout the United States. Kaemingk is a senior majoring in Social Work. She traveled with a group of students to New Orleans, Louisiana.

As part of an ongoing desire to make service a part of everyday life, these students chose to participate in a weeklong mission trip with PLIA (Putting Love Into Action). In March, students travelled to one of the following locations: Atlanta, Georgia; Cary, Mississippi; Chicago, Illinois; Cincinnati, Ohio; Colorado City, Arizona; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Denver, Colorado; Austin, Texas; Inez, Kentucky; Neon, Kentucky; New Orleans, Louisiana; Mendenhall, Mississippi; Shiprock, New Mexico; St. Louis, Missouri; and Lac Courte Oreilles, Wisconsin.

At the sites, students will do a wide variety of jobs, including home repair and painting, cleanup of center grounds or facilities, and childcare or teaching. They also cultivate longterm relationships between Dordt and the organization the group is serving. While on the trip, groups also typically spend some time on recreation and sightseeing.
