Katelyn Schaap received her nursing pin from Dordt College

2012 May 3

Katelyn Schaap of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was one of 16 nursing students who received a special pin from Dordt College to commemorate earning the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) from the college.

The pinning ceremony was hosted by the Dordt College nursing department on Thursday, May 3. Loretta Myers gave this year's keynote address, "The Five 'Rights' of a Great Nursing Career." Myers is the director of patient care at Floyd Valley Hospital/Avera Health in Le Mars, Iowa. Myers earned her Master's in Nursing Administration from South Dakota State University and her BSN from Morningside College and has over 20 years of patient care experience.

Dordt's unique nursing program is designed so that students typically become registered nurses in their third year. These graduates completed a fourth year with Dordt to earn their BSN.

"They have completed a rigorous program of study that has prepared them to meet the challenges of service in healthcare," said Pam Hulstein, professor of nursing at Dordt College. In addition to becoming registered nurses, to earn their BSN students are required to complete 135 additional hours of clinical preparation, and broadened their skill set in health assessments, community nursing, and evidence-based practice.

"The students are poised to take their place in the profession of nursing as fine examples of Christian professional nurses," said Hulstein.

Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, is a comprehensive Christian college rooted in the Reformed tradition. U.S. News & World Report, Forbes.com, Washington Monthly, and Princeton Review all list Dordt on their best colleges lists. Dordt is home to approximately 1,400 students.
