Stephanie Fynaardt to Receive Pin at Dordt College Nurses Pinning Ceremony May 9

2013 May 6

The nursing department at Dordt College will hold its spring pinning ceremony Thursday, May 9, when 24 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students will be awarded a unique Dordt nursing pin. Stephanie Fynaardt of Pella, Iowa, will receive this special pin at the ceremony.

Mary De Young, MSN, RN, will give this year's keynote address, "Painting Your Career on a Canvas." De Young has served as the clinical outreach coordinator for the Dordt nursing program since 2008. Prior to working at Dordt, she was an adult and pediatric ICU nurse for 25 years, working throughout the United States and Canada in world-renowned health care institutions. Additionally, De Young has participated in medical mission trips to Ecuador, doing clinic work in the Andes for an underserved population, and in Belarus working with the International Children's Heart Foundation caring for children in need of surgical intervention with complex congenital heart defects. She earned her diploma in nursing from Blodgett Memorial Medical Center School of Nursing, her BScN from the University of Alberta, and her MSN from the University of Nebraska Medical Center–Omaha.

This year's graduating class, the largest nursing class in Dordt's history. All the students participating in the pinning ceremony will also be graduating from Dordt College on Friday, May 10. The nursing students have previously earned their Associate of Science in Nursing degrees through a consortium agreement with St Luke's College in Sioux City, Iowa. Dordt's unique nursing program is designed so that students become registered nurses typically in their third year. These graduates completed a fourth year at Dordt to earn their BSN. Nursing is consistently one of the five largest majors at Dordt College. To learn more, visit www.dordt.edu/academics/programs/nursing.
